Oh, hey. It’s been a minute. Happy New Year! And welcome back to a brand-new season of The Science of Beauty: Allure’s podcast hosted by our editor in chief, Michelle Lee, and executive beauty director, Jenny Bailly. Have you missed us? Because we sure missed you. Now, buckle up, folks, because you’re in for three very special episodes on the vast and wondrous world of K-Beauty.

Why do three episodes on one topic? Well, because there’s a lot of ground to cover when it comes to K-Beauty, that’s why. So instead of shoving everything into one super-long show that might feel overwhelming, we divided our fodder up into three equally-thrilling episodes on different facets of Korean skin care: layering, hydration, and masks.

First things first, we’re covering everything you need to know about layering in skin care — like, for instance, how essences help with product absorption, the role serum plays in your routine, and why it’s so important to layer your skin care in a specific order. (Spoiler alert: Oil goes last!) Additionally, we’ll deep dive into the multi-step skin-care routine that was first popularized in Korea, which is largely responsible for our fixation with product-layering here in America.

As for our second K-Beauty-themed episode, we’re focusing on hydration, which might just be the single most important aspect of Korean skin maintenance. (I mean, hello: Hydration is the basis of trends like glass skin.) With help from a chemist and a board-certified dermatologist, we’ll discuss the science of skin moisture — including the all-too-common myths surrounding it — and what’s actually happening to the skin when you slather on certain ingredients. We’ll also get into what causes the skin to lose moisture; plus, what you can do to prevent it.
